Blog Part D:

In finding my websites for part D, I first did a Google search using a few of my keywords. (loss and privacy and digital age) In return I got back plethora of articles and Google books. I then did a search looking for words in the domain name. This search came back with the best results. The website I have chosen are privacy.org and privacyrights.org .

Privacy.org is a website dedicated to promoting privacy and preserving anonymity. It is a non-profit organization and it is in connection with The Electronic Information Center and Privacy International Center. Privacy International Center is a public interest research center in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1994 to focus public attention on emerging civil liberties issues and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and constitutional values.

Privacy.org provides you with all of the up-to-date information and news on current laws and initiatives on privacy. In reviewing this website it has plenty of articles that are related to privacy issues. And it also list legal publications for further research. I found it interesting that in one article it discusses how Google is now raising privacy concerns due to their tracking tools. They are now able to detect flu trends due to a search terms provided by the user.

This website is for a popular audience. It is written with no scholarly jargon. It is easy to read and understand. The website is very user friendly allowing you to click through pages and the download was fast.

I thought this website was very relevant to my essay because it discussed privacy in great detail and if I had additional questions there are links on the site that I can connect to, to get further answers.

Privacy rights clearing house is a website committed to the consumer. This websites mission is for consumer information and consumer advocacy. This nonprofit organization if founded by Beth Givens. She authored the encyclopedia entries on identity theft for Encyclopedia of Privacy (2007), World Book Encyclopedia (2004) and Encyclopedia of Crime and Punishment (2002).

This website is solely for the consumer. This websites is published to alert the consumer and make them aware of their privacy rights and the laws. This website discusses internet privacy as well a wealth of other privacy issues such as background checks in the work place and identity theft etc. It offers a lot of information. On Internet privacy it offers a fact sheet discussing with you facts about internet privacy and usage.

Being that this website is written solely for the consumer, it is written for a popular audience. It is really easy to read and understand. The website has a great for future use.

It is relevant to my research paper because it deals with privacy in the digital age and it discusses ways to protect yourself.

My final thesis statement is the same as it has been from the beginning. “The digital age brings about a loss of privacy and the government isn’t there to help.” My statement has not gone through any changes. I have not found enough information to confirm otherwise.

Copyrights Presentation and Discussion

Class response: November 19, Copyrights Presentation

I liked the PowerPoint presentation and discussion during this class. It was really informative and I learned a lot.

From this class there isn’t anything I would want to change. However I would like to go through the presentation again to take down some additional notes.

The instructor intended to educate the students on copyrights. (The history on copyrights, materials protected, the length of protection, ownership rights, etc.)

This presentation covered a wealth of information and I feel I walked away with all that was taught. I didn’t know that now everything you write is automatically protected under copyright laws. I guess that’s why it is so very important to understand plagiarism. What I find surprising is the length of protection on copyrights. This was something I wasn’t aware of and thanks to Disney the length of protection is just about double life. That’s amazing!

The article dealt with copyrights and fair use. It gives the details of one filmmaker’s account and how he wanted to use a short sound bite from Fox’s television show The Simpsons in his documentary. The filmmaker was given permission from the original creator and author to use the bite however, due to copyright laws and Fox’s ownership of rights he was unable to use it without paying a hefty fee. Fox gave him permission provided he paid ten thousand dollars.

The issue of fair use was a major concern in this article. Since the sound bite was not very long, less than five seconds and according to fair use given how the bite was used permission should not have been required. However, since the filmmaker did not want to pursue and argue for fair use, he changed the sound bite to an original.

I learned a great deal from this article especially about fair use. I understand that if you’re going to use someone else’s work you need permission. I wasn’t quite sure about fair use however after reading this article it put things in perspective.

This article is relevant to the course because it deals with copyrights and fair use. Whenever we do research we access materials with copyrights. And it is important for us know what are rights are when we use them and who has full ownership.

I can apply this to my life as a filmmaker long after college. This is all useful information for me especially if ever I need to use someone else’s work or if ever someone wanted to use my material. I have been briefed on the details.

This relates a lot to my film courses. Specifically, I am working on a found footage piece in one of my courses. I have to seek out other peoples work to include in my short film. After reading this article I know now that there isn’t much I can do with the piece once it is done. I know that I am able to use some of my clips because of “fair use”.

How did you find articles on your research question? I found articles on my research question by doing an extensive search in Academic Search Premier Database.

What was your process? For the Scholarly articles, I first went to the EBSCO host database and logged onto Academic Search Premier. I first did a keyword search on various words related to the digital age and privacy. Then from my results, I then limited my search to peer reviewed Journals. For the popular articles I followed the same steps however I limited my results to magazines. So that I could read each article I chose to view only articles that provided the full text.

This article is written in professional journal target to both the scholarly and popular audience.

This article discusses how internet privacy is a hoax and it explains how our privacy due to the digital age is dead. Giving his own personal intimate details the authors confesses to abusing ones privacy by reading personal emails that have been mistakenly sent to him. The author brings about awareness to the internet user alerting them on how privacy leaks are possible. And he urges internet users to stay mindful of the information they are sending out.

The article is rather short and to the point. It is written with a personal touch as the author speaks from personal experiences. Although this article is written in a professional journal there is little scholarly jargon making it an easy read for the popular audience. The author states his argument in the beginning of article and then gives clear examples that support his claim.

This article is relevant to my research paper because I believe that the digital age brings about a loss in privacy. This article gives great examples that support my argument.

DeVries is an attorney that practices privacy, data security, e-commerce and communications law with the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr in Washington, DC. He received his B.A. from Princeton University and J.D. at University of California, Berkeley. He writes this article to a scholarly audience in the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.

This article gives an in-depth overview of protection and privacy in the digital age. Broken down into sections this article examines the evolution of privacy, the impact of the digital technology, privacy battles and the failure of the old privacy frame work. Though there are laws in place that currently protect our privacy the internet is evolving in such a way it becomes hard so to keep up and the older laws.

This article is written for a scholarly audience. It deals a lot with our legal rights for privacy and it discusses privacy in general terms. It is not just limited to privacy in the digital age. This article is in-depth with a lot of information.

This article is relevant to my essay because it discusses the government’s role and the legal aspects. My argument is that government is not involved. However this article, gives reason why it may seem that the government is not involved. I find this information useful.

This is a recent article that discusses how current US Laws prevent real progress in the online privacy push. At this time the law only requires that the websites have a privacy policy. The writer comments on how although these policies are posted on websites they are not written to necessarily protect the visitor. These policies on the different websites do not come standard. They all vary in length and they are written with legal jargon that is hard for most internet users to understand without a law degree. These policies are written by the websites legal team and they look out for their own personal interests.

This article is a good article to read. It is written for a popular audience. It gives a better understanding of the privacy issue. It basically informs the reader by letting them know that even though websites have a privacy policy it doesn’t mean they are being protected. Websites put these policies on their website because simply protects them against any legal action.

This article is relevant to my research because I am looking for support for my claim that privacy is loss in the digital age and government isn’t there to help. This article touches on the issues. This article backs up my claim that we are not protected.

Manes has been writing about computers and their discontents for more than 15 years. He is coauthor of Gates, a biography of Microsoft’s’ chairman. This article is written in the popular magazine PC World written for a popular audience.

This article basically discusses how consumers today are at a loss when it comes to privacy. The writer talks about how it is almost impossible for one to keep personal information private this day and age. And with the internet it is even harder to keep up with where and when your personal information is being stored. It discuss how selling personal information is a hot commodity and when you log onto web sites and sign up for email accounts or send your information out in cyberspace when making a purchase you are becoming just another commodity. And laws are not there to help. Stephen Manes suggests that; the best way to think about privacy is to behave as though you don’t have any.

This was a great read. It was comprehensible and to the point. It states the argument in the beginning and backs up the claim and gives great examples. The writer is knowledgeable when it comes to PC so for me his opinion was well received.

This article comes from a reputable source with knowledge about the topic. This article is relevant because it provides support to my claim.

Databases 2: Search Strategies, October 27th

I liked the class on October 27th. The class discription was; Databases 2: Search Strategies.

I really enjoyed this class session because I learned so much about searching. As we discussed search strategies we talked about ways that you can improve your search as well as the different options that the databases have that can make your searching easier. We discussed things such as;

· Sorting your search (relevancy, date, journal title)

· Truncating words in the search string

· Proximity searches

· Stop words

· Wildcards

· “Phrases”

To make this class meeting better I would suggest another worksheet at this time. Although I liked the examples that we did in class I felt that another worksheet would provide the class with more examples.

The instructor intended to educate us on the different databases that are available, as well as instruct us on how to use the database to get the best search results.

From this class I feel comfortable doing searches. I am getting better results and I feel that I’m not leaving anything out of the search. I learned that the databases are actually user friendly and more importantly I learned how to use the help menu.

This reading talks about creating search strings and using the boolean technique. It discusses ways to open up the search by truncating words. It gives details on how to find good subject headings for the search. And it talks about ways to limit your search; by year published, language, and publication type.

From this article, I learned more on how to limit and sort my search according to relevancy.

This reading is relevant to the class because at this time we are discussing databases. This article instructs you on how to use the database to get effective research results.

I can apply this information to school. As students we have countless writing assignments. And this article puts things in order and makes the research process a little easier. It is easier to find materials when you know how to properly look for them and this is a useful how-to guide.

This article relates to all that is going on in our class. However, it directly ties in with both, our annotated bibliography and database presentation assignments.

Databases are valuable and they render the best results when you know how to use them.

I have found that first and foremost it is important to know how to properly create a search string. And there are a variety of ways to create a sting. Boolean operators are helpful as they link words together with; and, or ,not. Truncating a word in a search string with the asterisk (*) in some databases, it gives you varied forms of the word. This is a useful tool when you want to broaden your search. You can search for phrases as well as for search words that are in the proximity to another word you are looking up.

And when the results are in, you can sort through the results in order of relevance and often times view the abstract of the text.

Although this information only touches the surface of what all the database has to offer, I have found that in following even these few steps my research has been made easier.

Adjacency searching: A search using a database which looks for documents containing words that are located physically close to each other.
Proximity searching: You can use a proximity search to search for two or more words that occur within a specified number of words (or fewer) of each other in the databases. Proximity searching is used with a Keyword or Boolean search. (EBSCO Host)
Phrase searching: used to search for words as phrases. (phrase must be in quotes)
Stop Words: the short words in phrases that the databases will not pick up in the search.
Open Access: is free access to any full-text research materials online. This includes scholarly research articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

Database: a collection of related electronic records in a standardized format, searchable in a variety of ways, such as title, author, subject, and keyword. Common examples of databases are the library catalog and citation indexes.
Citation databases: a database that lists title and author of source, as well as where and when the source was published.
Citation and abstract databases: A database that lists title and author of source, as well as where and when the source was published and it also gives abstract view of source.
Full text databases: Database that searches for full text of the book or article.

Altman and Revkin

The Revkin article, found in the New York Times is about science research teams trying to keep up with research and this forever changing world. It discusses the issue behind the news media outlets trying to make the story while leaving out significant research information and terms. It then discusses the public and how they are at a loss with trying to keep up with all the inaccuracies. This as Revkin calls it is journalistic whiplash.

The article by Altman discusses peer reviewed articles in all its detail. It talks briefly about the history of peer reviews when it started and why there was a need for it. It discusses the process that peer reviewed articles go through. And it talks about the issues of peer reviewed articles.

I learned a lot from both of these articles. From the Revkin, this article confirms to me, the challenges researchers themselves are having a hard time keeping up with the time. And from the Altman article, I was educated on the peer review process. I was surprised to hear about the possible inaccuracies among the studies.

Both of these articles are relevant to the course. They both give a sort of behind the scenes review of how research is done. As they both discuss the many issues or research, one discusses research in the media circuit and the other discusses research in journals.

I can apply this to both school and life. For school they both will be useful on my next writing assignment as I objectively search for reference materials. And for home life, the Revkin article helps in understanding why you shouldn’t always believe the studies that are in the news. Further research is needed.

They both relate back to the beginning of the semester when we spoke about primary sources. These two articles reminds us of how important it is to evaluate your sources.
